Salami Jack o Lanterns for Halloween

Salami jack o lanterns

I have to admit it, I’m not the best when it comes to inventing original family friendly Halloween recipes. It’s because I’m English and this whole massive Halloween hoo-har is quite new to me, OK?! When we were kids if we were lucky we dressed up in a rubbish homemade costume and went trick or treating. Nowadays it is big news – and the kids expect to be doing something!

So I was asked to make some Halloween recipes for Easy Parenting magazine. My aim is always to make something achievable and easy. Maybe you are going to a party (it’d be nice to take something?) or maybe you are just staying in with your very little ones. Whatever you are doing, these are so, so easy and really quite effective. The kids loved them. If you like you could swap the salami for Jarlsberg cheese for non meat versions.

Makes: 10

Takes: 20 minutes

  • 250g ready-made puff pastry
  • 1 packet of pre-sliced salami circles
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Flour, to allow for rolling
  1. Preheat oven to 180C.
  2. Roll out the pastry with liberal amounts of flour, to about 1/2cm thick. Cut out circles the same size as salami – I used an IKEA glass.
  3. Place salami on half of the pastry circles and next to each one place another pastry circle. Cut eyes and a mouth out of that one – it doesn’t need to be perfect; mine weren’t! Set aside scraps.
  4. Pop the pastry faces on to the salami-topped pastry circles. Press the edges down to secure. Shape a little to make them slightly more like pumpkins. Using the leftover scraps, make little stalks and squash them on top.
  5. Brush with egg, pop onto a lined tray and bake for about 12 minutes or until puffed and golden.
