Diary: A late summer BBQ

At the weekend we had the most lovely BBQ in the garden. Adam cooked some incredible local steaks; I don’t do the BBQ-ing. I leave it to Adam, who is a bit of a maestro when it comes to cooking meat over hot coals. There was a very distinct late summer feel in the air. The light was intense but shadows were dark. Know what I mean? It was a bit chilly out of the sun, but in it you could still burn.

When Adam says he wants to BBQ you know it’s going to be good. But you also know you’re in for a bit of a mess and a long wait. He likes to take his time. So we spent an hour or so messing about in the garden. Me taking pictures and the kids playing with the sand table. And arguing a bit. We’re really starting to enjoy the farm now; it’s taken a while to really settle in, but it’s beginning to feel like home.

Waiting for the BBQ to heat up. Beyond the kids you can see Win Hill.

Arthur is a HUGE carnivore, just like his Dad. Here he’s getting a lesson from Ad on how to salt steaks when they’re on the grill. Important stuff. (Ideally it would’ve been fine salt, as opposed to Maldon Salt Flakes, apparently – who knew?)

Artie was entrance by the BBQ… Like father, like son.

We decided to eat in the barn, as the weather had been so unpredictable. We have no garden furniture at the moment, so we had to use hay bales, which had been leftover from Bea’s party.

Adam made some oven chips with stupid amounts of roasted garlic, a simple tomato and parsley salad – and an INSANE chimichurri sauce with 8 (yes, 8!!) cloves of raw garlic in. We smelt so strong of garlic the next day, it wasn’t even funny.

It’s not just Artie who loves barbecued meat! Here Bea is, tucking into some delicious steak.

Finally, I get to dive in too. The last summer BBQ? Possibly, but if I know Adam, the season won’t stop him cooking up a storm in the garden.

They were so good – Adam has the skills! I don't tend to BBQ as he's so good at it! X
